SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A toddler playing with a lighter sparked a house fire.  It started around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday in the 1000 block of West Monroe Terrace.  That's near Fort Avenue at Grand Street. The 3-year-old's parents were sleeping when the flames broke out.  Smoke detectors woke them up. The family was house-sitting.

NEWTON COUNTY--  Newton County prosecutors are expected to seek murder charges in a case related to the death of a toddler.      Ada Bowman, 18-months old, died Saturday after being found in a home with severe head trauma and bleeding last week      Her mother Gina Salazar is already being charged with felony child endangerment. The mother's boyfriend is also charged with assault.

JOPLIN -- Police in Joplin are investigating the death of an 18-month old baby. Officers were called to the baby's home in the 1300 block of Pennsylvania Street on Saturday, where they found the toddler unresponsive.       The cause of death is unknown, and investigators are not releasing the baby's gender.       The baby's name will also not be released until all family members have been notified.       We'll have more on this story as the details become available.

AVA, Mo. -- A woman is guilty of assaulting an 18-month-old boy last April.  The sheriff says Britni Tyra, 23, entered an Alford plea, in which she didn't admit guilt but conceded prosecutors have enough evidence to convict her.  The plea was entered last month. According to investigators, Tyra was babysitting her boyfriend's son, Karson, in April 2011 when she grabbed the boy by the ears and violently shook his head.  He was taken to a hospital with two black eyes and facial swelling, but has since recovered from those injuries.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Mo. -- Howell County authorities say it appears a toddler accidentally drowned in the backyard pool at her family's home near Mountain View. Abbey Sevor, 22 months, apparently fell in over the weekend.  She was dead on arrival at the hospital in West Plains.

A one-year old boy is dead after an accident in a Crawford County creek. The Missouri State Water Patrol says Phillip Werner was playing near Crooked Creek with his siblings in Steelville.  Investigators say he wandered into the water and was pulled away by the current.

Authorities say a 2-year-old Rolla boy is safe after a brief Amber Alert Saturday evening. Rolla Police say Kaiser Bailey's father, 33-year-old Nathaniel Bailey, took the toddler out of the boy's front yard Saturday.  The boy was found safe Saturday evening; the father has been taken into custody. Police say Nathaniel has no parental rights and a history of drug and violent behavior.

WEST PLAINS, Mo. -- A man from West Plains faces a prison sentence of 10 to 30 years (life) for shaking his 17-month-old daughter, Breeana, in 2006.   A jury convicted Brian Hawkins, 35, of first-degree assault last Friday. Investigators say the toddler was hospitalized for several bruises, significant bleeding and swelling of her brain.  Circuit Judge David Evans plans to sentence Hawkins on June 1.

MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. -- The State Medical Examiner's Office will do an autopsy on the body of a 17-month-old girl who died Sunday in Baxter County.  Initial indications are Addison Holt's neck became entangled in some kind of harness in her bedroom and she was unable to breathe. Sheriff John Montgomery says officers were called to the child's home in the Midway area on Sunday morning.  Emergency medical personnel performed CPR but Addison died at the hospital in Mountain Home about 6 a.m. Monday.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- At the end of a long day filled with meetings and events, managers at the Executive Conference Center noticed something a little unusual in the parking lot. "We just returned from the wedding show and we noticed there was a young lady, about 3 years old, standing in the parking lot without any shoes and screaming," said Bruce Dunn, general manager of the Executive Conference Center on Battlefield Road. With a meeting going on inside the event center, managers figured the child belonged to someone there.  After asking around for about 30 minutes and finding no one who knew who the girl was, however, they decided to call the police.

CHRISTIAN COUNTY -- Emergency crews rescued a family who were trapped at home in Linden, Missouri, because of flood waters.      The Christian County Sheriff said a couple and their toddler were taken from their home by boat, after water rose to the threshold of their home.      The house, in the 1,400 block of Reed Road, is on stilts.     Some concerned friends called authorities when they saw the rapidly rising water.     The couple said they were planning to wait it out inside the home.

WILLOW SPRINGS, Mo. -- A 2-year-old boy died in a house fire on Wednesday morning.  Police Chief Dan Dunn says the fire started around 7 a.m. and destroyed the home at 715 Park St. The victim was Cooper Bittick, son of Chelsea and Gary Bittick.  Dunn said the fire chief tried to get into the home to save Cooper but was driven back by heat and smoke.  Dunn said the fire spread quickly. Dunn says an investigator for the state Fire Marshal's Office determined the cause was a grease fire in the kitchen.  Cooper's body was in a back room.

Bunker, Mo. -- A house fire early Saturday killed two children in Reynolds County. The home on Missouri 72 was fully engulfed when fire crews arrived just before 2 a.m.   One adult and three children were outside when firefighters arrived. Two other children -- a 3 month old and a 2 year old -- were not able to make it out, according to the sheriff's office.   The cause of the fire is under investigation.

MOUNTAIN GROVE, Mo. -- The funeral for Jesse Turner, a toddler who died in a house fire early Friday morning, is Wednesday.  It'll be at Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church at 2.  The visitation for the family is at the church from 6 - 8 on Tuesday evening. A fund for people to help Jesse's family is set up at Great Southern Bank under his name or the name of his father, Steven Turner. “It is heartbreaking, very heartbreaking,” said April Martin, a friend of the family of 2-year-old Jesse Turner, on Friday.  “I was just here yesterday.

ROLLA, Mo. -- A jury on Friday recommended a man from Waynesville get a life prison sentence for the death of the 18-month-old son of his live-in girlfriend six years ago.  A day earlier, the jury convicted Ryan Evans, 29, of second-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death. Skyler Barrett died on Oct. 23, 2006, after he was injured while Evans was caring for him at the family's home in Waynesville.  After emergency room doctors treated Skyler at the hospital at Fort Leonard Wood, he was flown to a hospital in St. Louis, where doctors said he was brain dead when he arrived.

BENTONVILLE, Ark. -- Benton County Arkansas authorities say the death of a toddler who crawled inside a hot car and fell asleep was accidental.  Lincoln Andrew Brunner was three years old.  He died on August 3rd in triple digit daytime temperatures. Investigators say there's no evidence the parents were negligent.
