ATLANTA, Ga. - Texas A&M asked.  The Southeastern Conference said no, for now. The presidents of the SEC met in Atlanta Sunday to discuss the possibility expansion to the conference.  They released this joint statement after the meeting. "The SEC Presidents and Chancellors met today and reaffirmed our satisfaction with the present 12 institutional alignment," said SEC Presidents chair Dr. Bernie Machen.   " We recognize, however, that future conditions may make it advantageous to expand the number of institutions in the league.  Texas A&M will reportedly announce its intentions to whether stay in the Big Conference or bolt to the SEC Monday afternoon.  The SEC has reportedly not given the Aggies an invitation to join.  They would likely have to leave the Big 12 to earn it. "We discussed criteria and process associated with expansion," said Dr. Machen.  "No action was taken with respect to any institution, including Texas A&M.” A&M flirted with leaving the Big 12 Conference nearly a year ago, but decided then to stay.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The ink is nearly dry on Texas A&M's plans to bolt the Big 12 Conference for the Southeastern Conference. So who's next?  SEC Commissioner Mike Slive thinks the math works best at 13 schools in his power conference. "As I said over the past year or so, the SEC has had no particular interest in expansion," said Slive.  "If Texas A&M's President Dr. Bowen Loftin had not called me in late July, we had no plans to explore adding an institution. " Missouri, Virginia Tech, Florida State, Clemson and West Virginia all seem logical additions as a 14th school.  The SEC has only expanded once in its 78-year history,  adding Arkansas and South Carolina in 1991.

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - A geography lesson is always needed before a university joins a new conference. There is one problem with the t-shirt.  Well, two or three.  The t-shirt features a map of the SEC states.   However, it does not include Texas nor Missouri.  Missouri is also joining the conference in July.  The map also includes North Carolina, a state that has no SEC schools.

The redshirt freshman beat out Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o and Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein. Te'o would have been the first defensive player to receive the award. Klein would have been the first player from Kansas State to ever with the award.
