SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Police are looking for two people involved in an apparent attempted robbery at a Walgreens store in east Springfield. The cashier on duty said two people wearing red bandanas entered the Walgreens at 2640 E. Sunshine St. just after 4 a.m., and one of them displayed a gun. The two asked where the manager was, but the cashier told them the manager was in the back. The two then ran out of the store without taking anything, according to the cashier. Security footage containing images of the two have been turned over to Springfield police.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Hollywood actress Angelina Jolie announced Tuesday that she underwent a double mastectomy to reduce her risk of getting breast cancer after the results of a genetic test showed she was at high risk for developing the disease. "She's being very proactive in managing her breast health and trying to risk of getting breast cancer," said Dr. John Bumberry, a doctor for Mercy Springfield. In an op-ed column for the New York Times, Jolie spoke openly of her decision to undergo a preventive surgery after testing positive for BRCA-1. That's a gene that increases a woman's risk for developing breast and ovarian cancer.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Rock band Relient K will soon grace the stage at the Gillioz Theatre. The downtown Springfield venue has announced that Relient K will perform July 20 at 8 p.m. alongside The Almost and The Rocket Boys. Tickets will go on sale this Friday at 10 a.m. Relient K, which formed in 1997 and is named after one of the band members' old vehicle, has released five studio albums, three of which have gone gold. They will be joined on stage by Christian band The Almost and indie rock band The Rocket Boys, who released their album "20,000 Ghosts" in 2009.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - For the second day in a row, a home in the Ozarks has been destroyed by fire. A mobile home in the 5100 block of West Sunshine went up in flames at roughly 1 a.m. Tuesday. Firefighters responded to fight the blaze, which they say could be seen from at least one mile away. A father and son lived at the home, but only one of them was home at the time and made it out safely. Firefighters are investigating what caused the fire, and preliminary word is that an unattended cigarette may be to blame.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Springfield was one of 11 entities in Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska to be selected for award on May 8 for a grant from the Environmental Protection Agency to assess, clean up and revitalize brownfield properties. The EPA allocated a total of $4.5 million in the Region. Springfield received $400,000. Brownfields are properties whose expansion, redevelopment, or reuse may be complicated by the presence or potential presence of a hazardous substance, pollutant, or contaminant.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A man from Springfield pleaded guilty in federal court on Monday for sexual exploitation of a minor. Ezra Gramm, 39, pleaded guilty before U.S. Magistrate Judge David Rush to the charge in an indictment handed up last Oct. 3. By pleading guilty, Gramm admitted he made contact with the 13-year-old victim, identified as Jane Doe, via an Internet chat room in late 2009. Gramm and the child victim engaged in online chat sessions and exchanged text messages with one another.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - A fire damaged a large portion of a home that a family was set to move into in east Springfield. Springfield fire officials say crews were called to fight the blaze in the 1000 block of South Stewart at 12:40 Monday morning. A passerby had called 911 and reported heavy fire in the back of the home. Firefighters put the blaze out in 10 to 15 minutes, officials said. The fire marshal is investigating the blaze's cause. No one was inside the home at the time.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Springfield fire investigators blame careless smoking on a Monday afternoon fire at a building off Park Central Square. That building was under renovation on Park Central West. Firefighters say only the construction crew was in the building at the time of the fire. Damage was confined to the facade. The building is an old two-story mercantile building being converted to a mixed use facility.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A man from Springfield and his Rotary Club are in the running for a $10,000 prize to aid an effort to keep youngsters from getting hooked on methamphetamine. The money would come from the Safeco Insurance Community Hero contest. John Horton, a past president of Rotary Club of Springfield Southeast, is one of 16 Community Hero Award winners selected nationwide by Safeco Insurance to be in the contest. Members of the public can vote online , with the winners' charities getting either $10,000 or $5,000.
