SPRINGFIELD, Mo -- Over the past few decades, countless people have attended a sporting event or concert in Springfield at a facility with the Hammons name. In Spring of 2004, Hammons Field opened in downtown Springfield. Within the year, it would be the home of the double A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals. People with the Springfield Cardinals say this is just one segment of his legacy. Nearly one decade ago his vision became a reality to build the stadium. Fans went to Hammons Field for a Memorial Day game, but also honored the man who gave so much to Springfield.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - He might not have built Springfield from the ground up. However, there is no doubt John Q. Hammons helped craft the community into the city we know today. "We would not be as cosmopolitan as we are. We would not have the quality of life that we enjoy," stated Jim Anderson, President of the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce. Hammons was a developer in the right place at the right time. He built shopping centers and subdivisions as Springfield's population boomed in the 1950s and 60s. In the 1980s he started redeveloping the decaying-core of downtown Springfield, first with University Plaza. Then, in 1987, construction was completed on the tall office tower that would bear his name- Hammons Tower.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - If you're having one of those days, and need a reminder of the good things in life, look no further than the Miracle League ballfield. It's impossible to leave without a smile. "They're cheering me on to hit the ball," Jacob Thornsberry says. Thornsberry was playing baseball on the field Monday evening. The Miracle League field consists of rubberized turf, wheelchair-accessible dugouts, and painted-on bases -- all of which make America's favorite pastime a sport open to kids who otherwise wouldn't get their chance to play.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Last year's Texas League champions are getting ready take to the baseball diamond here in Springfield for the first time this year. In 2012, the Springfield Cardinals brought their first ever Texas League Championship trophy home. It's something they'd like to do again, but that's easier said than done. They'll have to do it without some key players like Kolten Wong and Oscar Taveras, who moved up to Triple-A Memphis -- and Trevor Rosenthal, who made the St. Louis big-league squad.
