Arkansas officials say it will cost around $10-million to clean up all of the snow from the last round of winter weather. Last year, the highway department spent nearly $12-million--an amount they say could easily be surpassed if another storm rolls through. The budget only allots $5 million for road clearance.   Any more than that and they have to pull money from their road repair fund.

TODAY Mainly 40s Becoming cloudy; showers this afternoon and evening. TONIGHT 20s/30s Rain or snow showers, then drizzle or freezing drizzle. WEDNESDAY 30s Mostly cloudy. 12-hour forecast 24-hour forecast Satellite & Radar Wind Chill Allergy Index Almanac Good morning...an upper low is moving our way from the west this morning and high clouds are quickly increasing.  Radar has been showing some returns in the plains but they're relatively spotty.  Moisture will be lacking overall with this system, though a few hundredths of an inch could fall beginning late this afternoon into tonight.  At first this will likely be rain, but temperatures will cool enough for some snow by late evening and early tonight.  However, the prime time for lift greatest moisture depth will be when near-surface temperatures are still above freezing, so any snow that falls will likely not stick.  In fact by the time surface temperatures do get to near freezing moisture depth will have decreased such that snow crystals are unlikely and we'll transition to drizzle.  There could certainly be a few slick...

AURORA, Mo. - April showers have brought May flowers…and flurries "Even this is pretty crazy," stated owner Doyle Ferguson. At the Aurora Greenhouses, the purple petunias really pop out against the bright white snow. "You can actually see the bottom side of the snow through the glass tops of the greenhouses," said Ferguson. This time of month, business is usually blooming. "We should be planting our vegetable plants, planting our flower beds and landscaping. Today has been a paperwork day and a spruce up day. " The flowers werent flying off the shelves , but there is still plenty to keep them busy "Its prom season here in aurora and of course next day is Mother's Day weekend," Ferguson explained.

Gayla Crisp found a photo of her grandmother that she believes was taken the last time it snowed in the Ozarks in May.  The photo shows Rosa May Florence Woods in the Dry Valley community, a rural area in Lawrence County northwest of Pierce City. Crisp remembers her parents talking about the snowstorm in May when they were teenagers.   The National Weather Service in Springfield says the last time there was measurable snow in the Ozarks this late in the spring was on May 2, 1929.

SPRINGFIELD, -- It has been decades since people have seen anything like this in the Ozarks. This is the time of year when there are more spring activities in downtown. People were setting up their tents for the annual Arts Festival still scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday. Jacob Gaumer helps run the art gallery Canvas on South Avenue. "Well there have been two people that have come in today because the weather is just lovely," said Gaumer. Staying indoors might be the best way to enjoy the festivities.

from John Robinson, National Weather Service, Little Rock, Ark | May 2, 2013
Since we've had a lot of questions about Arkansas snows in April and/or May, here are some statistics worked up by Brian Smith, one of our senior forecasters. For Arkansas: Latest accumulating snow:  0.2 inch at Corning on April 24, 1910 Latest snow:  Trace at Fayetteville, Gravette, and Harrison on April 30, 1903 For Little Rock: Latest accumulating snow:  0.8 inch on March 30, 1987 Latest snow:  Trace on April 19, 1983 We've gotten e-mail messages and seen comments online about people saying they had seen accumulating snow at various places in Arkansas in May.  While it's important to remember that weather records are taken from official observing stations only, the dates and years that people have said they saw snow in Arkansas in May would have been virtually impossible.
