WAYNESVILLE, Mo. -- A soldier from Fort Leonard Wood pleaded guilty on Monday for killing her estranged husband four years ago.  In a plea agreement with the Pulaski County prosecuting attorney, Stacy Powell pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and armed criminal action.  Powell was charged with first-degree murder until the plea hearing. Prosecuting Attorney Kevin Hillman says, in exchange for the guilty plea to the lesser charge, he agreed to recommend a maximum sentence of 15 years for voluntary manslaughter and a consecutive 10-year sentence for armed criminal action.  Circuit Judge Tracy Storie scheduled a sentencing hearing for April 9. Investigators said Powell shot her husband, Brian Powell, 42, in the chest in March 2008 at the couple's home at 14145 Howard Lane, between Waynesville and Dixon.   Stacy Powell, who was 40 at the time, was stationed at a recruiting office in Texas but was home on leave at the time of the shooting.  Brian Powell sued for divorce six weeks before he was killed.  Online court records show the couple had at least one child.

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. -- Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney Kevin Hillman says he turned possible prosecution of embezzlement from the Waynesville School District over to the Attorney General's Office.  Hillman says he knows the person who may have taken the money and wants to avoid a possible conflict of interest. The school district and the Waynesville Police Department have done “an extensive investigation,” Hillman said in a news release.  He said the suspect is identified and “is not a threat to the community, and is currently not in a position to continue any potential criminal activity in regards to the school district.” Hillman also said his office and other county officials work on many projects with school district officials, who may be witnesses if the case is prosecuted.  He said that's another reason he wants to avoid “a perception of bias in the way my office handled this case.  I want the public to be confident that the decisions in this case are based on the law and facts, and nothing else.
