NEAR JOPLIN, Mo. - A Neosho man died in a crash three miles north of Joplin on Thursday. State troopers say Gary D. Maddox, 69, was killed when his 1997 Toyota Camry crossed the center line while traveling east on Missouri Route 96 and struck an oncoming tractor-trailer. Maddox was pronounced dead at the scene by the Jasper County Coroner. Troopers say Maddox was not wearing a seatbelt. The driver of the tractor-trailer suffered minor injuries.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Retired educator Wanda Gray died last weekend, according to a post on Springfield School District's Facebook site. The post read as follows: "We share our condolences with the family of SPS retiree Wanda Gray, who died this weekend. Gray Elementary School was named for her and the district's Starcatcher Award was created in her honor because of the outstanding example she set for educators. " Wanda Gray worked for Springfield School District beginning in 1967, when she became the district's Coordinator of Elementary Instruction. Wanda Gray Elementary School was named after her in 1985, the same year she retired. The school opened in 1986.

Monett,Mo. -- Tuesday authorites released the identities of the two men killed Sunday in a plane crash in Lawrence County. Deryl Edwards, a 41-year-old attorney from Joplin, owned the twin engine Cessna that crashed. Rick Armstrong, a flight instructor from Neosho, was flying with him. The 1956 Cessna 310 crashed near Stotts City just before 6 o'clock Sunday night. Both Edwards and Armstrong were killed. "We hangar their airplanes here (at Monett Municipal Airport), and it's hit a lot of people around here, the Neosho area, pretty hard," said Howard Frazier, the manager of the Monett Municipal Airport.

NEOSHO, Mo. -- Two children are okay after being rescued from their family's burning mobile home near Neosho early Thursday morning. The fire started just before 2am. Investigators are trying to find what started the flames.

NEOSHO, Mo. -- A fire killed a 7-year-old boy and injured his 4-year-old sister early Thursday. The Neosho Fire Department says crews responded to the mobile home fire near Palm Road at Kingsland Road southwest of Neosho just before 2 a.m. Firefighters found the two children in a bedroom and ambulances took them to hospitals. Liam Lane, 7, died while being treated. Sandra Lane, 4, is hospitalized for smoke inhalation. Two adults escaped through a bedroom window. Josh Lane, 34, and Kassi Lane, 30, were treated and released from a hospital in Joplin.

NEOSHO, Mo. -- A crash in Newton County Missouri this morning has killed a man from Rocky Comfort. State Troopers say Steven Kerley ran off Highway H and flipped east of Neosho just before 2am. Kerley was 25 years old

Pineville, MO -The McDonald County Sheriff's Office received information during the late evening of Wednesday, May 23 rd regarding a possible homicide that happened approximately a week prior outside of Goodman, Missouri. During the course of this investigation, it was learned that either late Thursday or early Friday morning of May 17th or 18th, a shooting occurred at a residence located off of Highway B, approximately 5 miles west of Goodman in rural McDonald County. Investigators received information that led them to the location of the handgun used in the shooting as well as the container used to conceal the body.

NEWTON COUNTY -- The Newton County coroner says a man whose body was found burned outside of Neosho died from a heart attack. The coroner says Larry Elger was burning brush last Thursday when he suffered a heart attack while trying to put out the flames. Elger was 62-years-old.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A Springfield woman will spend 13 years in prison for breaking into a Neosho man's home and robbing him. 36-year-old Shelby Gay, and two accomplices held up the 72-year-old victim at gunpoint two years ago. Prosecutors say Gay plotted the robbery after meeting 72 year old George Yetter thru an internet dating service.

NEOSHO, Mo. (AP)-- A hunter in southwest Missouri saw a rare sight recently two whooping cranes. The Missouri Department of Conservation says the hunter was north of Neosho this week when he saw the whooping cranes. The large, endangered birds migrate from Canada to the Gulf Coast in the fall. The Conservation Department says there are fewer than 500 whooping cranes left in the wild. Their wingspans can exceed 7 feet. Jeff Cantrell, a conservation education consultant for the department, says he hurried to the scene and found the adult crane and a juvenile with a leg band and radio transmitter.
