JOPLIN, Mo. -- The National Weather Service provided additional insight into the decision to rate the tornado last Sunday at the top of the Enhanced Fujita Scale.  The tornado was given an initial rating of an EF-4 before it was upgraded the next day. Bill Davis with the National Weather Service said investigators look at structural damage and how far heavy objects were thrown.  This tornado, for example, tossed concrete parking lot "bumpers" that...

edited news release from Lisa Cox, public information officer, Springfield Police Department | September 4, 2013
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Springfield Police Department is concerned about the increasing number of “scooters” on city streets, and says some people who use them commit traffic violations.  Those violations include exceeding the posted speed limits, failing to signal turning movements, improper lane usage, driving without a license, and driving while intoxicated. A scooter is defined as a "motorized bicycle" by  state law as any two-wheeled or three-wheeled device having an automatic transmission and a motor with a cylinder capacity of not more than 50 cubic centimeters, which produces less than three gross brake horsepower, and cannot have a maximum speed of more than 30 miles per hour on flat ground.  Police officers see many of the newer scooters that easily exceed 30 mph.  By state law, once the scooter is  capable of exceeding 30 mph , it is considered a motorcycle and is subject to all the normal  motorcycle rules and regulations , which states the scooter must be registered as a motorcycle (displaying license plates)

HERMITAGE, Mo. -- A man was charged on Friday with leaving the scene of an accident after his mother was found dead along a highway on Thursday night.  Lonnie Hogsett, 45, of Wheatland could face a prison sentence up to four years if he's convicted. The Hickory County Sheriff's Department is still investigating the death of Joletta Hogsett, 64, who either jumped or was pushed from a moving pickup near Weaubleau.  Law enforcement officers arrested Lonnie Hogsett at a bar in Humansville.

TODAY Low 70s Mostly sunny and windy! TONIGHT 50s Partly cloudy SATURDAY Low 70s Partly cloudy and windy 12-hour forecast 24-hour forecast Satellite & Radar Wind Chill Allergy Index Almanac Good morning!  The wind has remained persistent overnight and kept temperatures much warmer than the last few mornings.  Readings are in the 40s and 50s, and we'll see highs in the upper 60s to lower 70s this afternoon.  The same is true for Saturday with a gradual increase in clouds.  Both days will be quite windy with gusts occasionally over 35 mph in a few spots.  Moisture will begin arriving from the gulf today and increase through Sunday ahead of the cold front.  The front will arrive by mid-day, so though we'll start quite warm highs will only be in the lower to perhaps middle 60s.  Rain and storms will become likely and 1-2" amounts look good area-wide for this system.  Instability will be limited so severe weather isn't very likely.  Much colder air will arrive behind the front late Sunday.  There is a small chance that some flakes of snow could fall on the tail end of the system before the moisture is shoved east.  Much colder conditions are likely for early next week with Monday particularly cold.  Another rain maker should arrive by the end of the week.

Good evening!  Highs reach the 60s again today—and even topped 70 in Joplin!  A warm front is located over northern Missouri eastward through Kentucky this evening with a nice south breeze over the Ozarks.  A mild night is in store and moisture near the Gulf Coast will gradually begin moving north tonight.  This will likely increase our clouds but I think we’ll see enough sun tomorrow...
