SPRINGFIELD -- Friends and family said goodbye on Saturday to 19 local soldiers. The Missouri National Guard members are heading to Afghanistan to conduct medical evacuations for wounded soldiers.     This will be William Fulbright's first deployment to the war-torn country.      While he's serving overseas, he'll likely miss the birth of his first baby. "It's going to be rough, but when I married him, I knew this was a possibility so I'm more than willing to take on the challenges and support him," said Brittney Fulbright.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- More than 200 Missouri National Guard soldiers are preparing for deployment to Kuwait.  Family and friends gathered for a send-off ceremony at Remington's on Republic Road on Wednesday afternoon.

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. -- Two National Guardsmen from the Ozarks are being hailed as heroes.  They saved a 93-year-old woman who was trapped in her car by raging flood water. Spc. Junior Bombard of Ozark and Sgt. Tim Bridges of Carthage were helping local authorities when the call came in Tuesday morning.  The woman had tried to drive across the highway, which was swamped by the rising Black River.  The men used a wench and cable line to pull the woman to safety. Bridges says they were just doing their jobs.  Both men are with the 1138th Military Police Company.

NANGARHAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Missouri National Guard Agribusiness Development Team VI reports no fatalities or life threatening injuries following an attack on the forward operating base where it is stationed in Nangarhar Province. Missouri National Guard adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Stephen Danner, says the Resiliency and Family Support teams are working to assist the unit's families in Missouri.  All families have been contacted by the Missouri National Guard and have information on their soldier or airman.  Gov. Jay Nixon also has been briefed about the attack.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Some Missouri National Guard soldiers headed to the Middle East after a farewell ceremony on Friday.  The five soldiers will be stationed on the Sinai Peninsula to enforce the Egyptian -- Israeli peace treaty.  The soldiers have been in training for the last several weeks to get ready.

SPRINGFIELD, --  The superintendent of Joplin Schools was in Springfield to thank the Missouri National Guard members for their service in the aftermath of the May 2011 tornado. Joplin Schools Superintendent C.J. Huff says part of the rebuilding process is thanking those who've helped along the way. For more than one year and a half the Missouri National Guard was in Joplin. Troops arrived with their resources just hours after the storm. The guard helped with security, traffic and setting up a mobile medical unit.

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. -- Separate accidents on Wednesday killed one person, and sent six others to hospitals for treatment.  A spokesman for the fort says four Army civilians were conducting railroad maintenance when they were injured.  One died at the scene, three others were taken to hospitals in Springfield and Rolla.  The Army's Criminal Investigation Command is investigating that accident. Separately, a spokeswoman for the Missouri National Guard says three of its soldiers were hurt when they suffered an electrical shock while working with a tactical antenna during a training exercise.  They are recovering at hospitals at Fort Leonard Wood and in Springfield.  The soldiers are members of the 135th Signal Company out of the Kansas City area.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Soldiers from the Missouri National Guard's 935th Aviation Support Battalion are coming home today. More than 130 soldiers will be reunited with their family and friends this afternoon at 1:30, at Remington's on West Republic Road. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon will speak at the ceremony, and the community is also invited to welcome the soldiers home from their deployment to Kuwait.

BIXBY, Mo. -- Missouri Governor Jay Nixon spent part of his day Saturday surveying the damage done by a wildfire burning in the Mark Twain Forest. As of Friday, the fire in Iron County was about 40% contained.  The blaze has burned about 500 acres so far. Governor Nixon has directed the Missouri National Guard to be ready with supplies and personnel to support firefighting operations if needed.

CLARKSVILLE, Mo. -- People in the eastern Missouri hamlet of Clarksville are getting a boost from the Missouri National Guard and even from prison inmates as they battle the surging Mississippi River. The river is expected to crest nearly 11 feet above flood stage on Sunday at Clarksville, an unprotected town of 442 residents about 60 miles north of St. Louis. Residents and volunteers have built a makeshift levee made of gravel, plastic overlay and sandbags. On Saturday, attention turned to making sure the sandbag levee is sturdy enough to hold back the water.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Family and friends gathered together to welcome home some of Missouri's heroes at the Remington Event Center on Thursday afternoon.  Members of the Missouri National Guard's 935th Aviation Support Battalion were deployed to Kuwait in August 2012 and returned home to the cheers of a large crowd that included state dignitaries. Loved ones of the 935th didn't let anything keep them from getting to their soldiers.  They simply hugged them for the first time in nearly a year.
