SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Fire crews extinguished a house fire in north Springfield this morning. Dispatchers received a call from the 800 block of West Poplar Street. We're told the home was vacant and no one was hurt in the fire. The home was in the process of calling down. Springfield fire marshal Randy Villines says the blaze was arson and is still under investigation. (This version of the story corrects the address that previously stated the call came from the 700 block of North Missouri Avenue.)

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A man from Jasper County faces a prison sentence up to 25 years for a series of bank robberies, including one in Springfield. Michael Manis of Alba will be sentenced in U.S. District Court after he confessed to holding up the Great Southern Bank near Chestnut Expressway at Scenic Avenue in February, and two other heists in Webb City and Joplin. Police say Manis used a pellet gun to threaten tellers and get the cash.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Construction crews will close a portion of Chestnut Expressway tonight east of Kansas Expressway. The westbound lanes of Chestnut Expressway will be closed at Broadway Avenue beginning at 7 p.m. to allow crews to fix a bump in the pavement at the railroad crossing there. The closure will last until 5 a.m. Friday.

SPRINGFIELD -- The Springfield Police Department ramped up efforts to crack down on drunk drivers on Friday night by conducting a sobriety checkpoint. Officers targeted the intersection of Chestnut Expressway and Nettleton Avenue. Ten people were arrested for impaired driving; three people were taken into custody for drug possession. A few drivers were issued summons for driving with a suspended license and not having a child in a proper safety seat.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A Springfield Police Department Special Response Team training exercise on Friday afternoon alarmed a lot of people in the downtown area.  The SRT officers were practicing how to respond to a hostage situation near the corner of Chestnut Expressway at Main Street. It is not real.  It is only training!

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Power is back on in the area of Chestnut Expressway at West Bypass.  The outage happened just after 3:30 a.m. Tuesday. An emergency dispatcher says a power pole snapped.  City Utility of Springfield crews replaced the pole within an hour.  Police had to direct traffic through the busy intersection until power could be restored.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- There's one less place in Springfield to get your donut fix.  The Krispy Kreme store on North Glenstone Avenue at Chestnut Expressway closed its doors. Company leaders say the store hadn't brought in much business in recent years.  It was officially closed on Sunday night. Krispy Kreme fans in the Ozarks still have an outlet for donuts. The store on South Campbell Avenue is open.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Work begins the week of April 9 on a project to convert the Chestnut Expressway at U.S. 65 diamond interchange into a diverging diamond interchange.  Preliminary work will begin with contractor crews installing work zone signs, moving in equipment and working on the ramps at the interchange. During the project , drivers can expect narrowed driving lanes and narrowed ramp lanes. Traffic slowdowns can be expected at times.    Two major traffic impacts are scheduled during the project :  * For about 30 days in mid-summer, it will be necessary to close a short section of Chestnut Expressway/Farm Road 132 between the U.S. 65 ramps and a point just east of the former Hickory Hills school.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Firefighters are investigating what sparked a fire at a home east of Springfield early Wednesday morning. Crews were called to a home on the 4700 block of Blackthorn Lane around midnight. That's near Chestnut Expressway and Highway 65. Witnesses say a woman woke up to the smell of smoke and helped her family get out of the home. One person was treated for smoke inhalation Damage is concentrated towards the back of the home.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Power was back on by 5:45 a.m. for most customers impacted by an outage in west Springfield early Thursday.  Nearly 300 were in the dark after a strong storm rolled through the city around 4 a.m. The power outage also knocked out some traffic signals and street lights.  The outage impacted an area from Scenic Avenue to West Bypass near Chestnut Expressway.
