SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A suspicious package that led to a partial evacuation of the Battlefield Mall contained a laptop charger.  Witnesses say the package, a black bag, was left unattended in a sitting area, near the east entrance of JC Penney.  The bomb squad was called to the scene and customers were evacuated from the east corridor of the mall just before 5:00pm An x-ray of the package revealed an item inside that appeared to be...

SPRINGFIELD -- It may be only the beginning of November, but Santa Clause has already come to town. The jolly man in the red suit arrived on Saturday at the Battlefield Mall in Springfield.      A welcoming parade and a holiday-themed party kicked off his visit.      Santa will set up shop in the JCPenney east court through Christmas Eve.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - A new player is entering the restaurant scene here in the Ozarks. Five Guys Burgers & Fries has been hard at work on two Springfield locations -- one at Battlefield Mall and another on North Kansas Expressway. The Battlefield Mall location is preparing to open on Thursday, according to the company's Twitter feed ( @Five_Guys ). The North Kansas Expressway location is expected to open in January 2013. The national chain's nearest location to southwest Missouri had been Rogers, Ark.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The Springfield Police Department found a man who they believed tried to steal a woman's purse on Friday evening, Dec. 2, in the parking lot near the Macy's store at Battlefield Mall.  Justin Feldman is charged with second-degree attempted robbery after police say he confessed. Crime Stoppers and the police department on Wednesday released surveillance photos of the man who assaulted the woman and people who were with him.  Police said video and photos of the parking lot show a man hitting the woman three times and grabbing at her purse, and then jumping in a waiting white car with others inside, and speeding away.  Several people called Springfield police to say they thought they knew the robbers.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Halloween may be just behind us, but Christmas is on several retailers' minds as the holiday season approaches. Santa Claus is scheduled to make an early November appearance at the Battlefield Mall on Saturday. A parade and holiday-themed party starts tomorrow at the mall just before 11 a.m. Santa will stick around to hear Christmas wishes from children and pose for photos. He'll set up shop in the J.C. Penney east court through Christmas Eve.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Crime Stoppers and the Springfield Police Department asked for help on Wednesday identifying people who robbed a woman on Dec. 2. It occurred a few minutes after 6 p.m. on the parking lot of Battlefield Mall near the Macy's entrance. It turns out, however, that this is just one of 13 similar attacks in Springfield since Thanksgiving. "We are looking at this as an isolated incident right now," said Officer Dave Snider, a Springfield Police Department spokesman.  "We still have all the suspects out there.  We haven't ID'd anyone.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.-- Finding fresh food in the winter just got a little bit easier. Saturday marks the beginning of the Winter Farmer's Market. The market will offer locally grown produce every other Saturday through March. The market opens Saturday morning at 8:30, in the Battlefield Mall parking lot.  That's near Battlefield and Glenstone.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - Work will begin soon on two new Five Guys Burgers and Fries locations in the city. Five Guys has received a building permit from the City of Springfield to begin construction on a new restaurant located at 2711 N. Kansas Expressway.  That's in the Town and Country shopping center between Kearney Street and I-44. Construction is expected to take several weeks.  An exact opening date has not been announced. Five Guys has also announced a location for the Battlefield Mall.  That 2,400 square foot restaurant will be located on the exterior 'Lifestyles Center' near Ann Taylor.

SPRINGFIELD -- Mothers from around the Ozarks attempted to help break a world record on Saturday by changing their babies diapers--cloth diapers. It was part of an international Earth Day event to break the record of more than 8,000 diapers changed at one time.      At the Greater Springfield Farmers' Market, in the parking lot of the Battlefield Mall, more than 50 mothers changed their babies into a cloth diaper. The goal, organizers said, was to show parents cloth diapers is an option for modern families.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - A month after Springfield's first Five Guys Burgers and Fries location opened at the Battlefield Mall, the chain's second restaurant has opened on the city's north side. The Queen City's second Five Guys burger joint is now open at 2711A N. Kansas Expwy., just south of Interstate 44 and in the shopping center just south of Walmart. The restaurant opened Sunday.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - A longtime local Italian eatery is on the way out, and will be replaced with an upscale Mexican restaurant. The last day of operations for the Springfield Pasta Company , on S. National at James River Freeway, will be this Sunday, January 13th.  The eatery first opened in 1985 in the Battlefield Mall as a Pasta House location.  The name was changed to Springfield Pasta Company in 2011. Pasta House owner Steve Heil says the restaurant space will be closed for six months for a complete transformation into a Cantina Laredo franchise.  The building will receive a complete exterior and interior renovation, along with an expanded parking lot. Heil say he's excited to bring the chain to Springfield, and believes the concept is something residents of the city want and need.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- As Santa checked his list to prepare for his big trip, a lot of people in the Ozarks headed to Battlefield Mall in Springfield to finish shopping for everyone on their list.  Last-minute gift buyers were not alone.   According to the National Retail Federation, 10 percent of shoppers waited until Christmas Eve to buy their presents. "It's nice. I mean you can't complain when you work retail and it's busy. " said Joey Kinder, a manager at Tradehome Shoes.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Police say a man in his mid-40s was found shot to death in a car in a south Springfield neighborhood.  Beyond that, police appear ready to release no other information on Friday. Lt. Greg Wheelen said at the scene that two homeowners called police when they heard several gunshots just before 9 p.m. Thursday in the 2300 block of South Delaware Avenue, just west of Springfield National Cemetery and north of Battlefield Mall. A nearby homeowner said he was unloading his pickup when he heard what he thought was fireworks.
