SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - A new traffic configuration in south Springfield receives its first major test this morning with the morning commute.
The Kansas Expressway and James River Freeway interchange reopened to traffic 8 a.m. Sunday in a diverging diamond pattern. It's Springfield's fourth such interchange, in which traffic flows on the left side of the roadway then switches back to the right side.
Transportation officials say the benefits are impossible to ignore, and more diverging diamonds are on the way: Battlefield Road and Highway 65 is in the planning stage, as well as Highway 65 and CC in Ozark.
