SPRINGFIELD, MO- A months-long project to reconfigure a busy interchange on the city's south side is nearing completion.  Drivers and nearby business owners say the opening can’t come soon enough.

“A lot of our clients have to reroute to get to their appointments, making them later,” stated Jackie Davis, stylist at the Pigtails and Crewcuts hair salon.

The interchange at Kansas Expressway at James River Freeway has been under reconstruction for months now.  Drivers have ben forced to manuevera a maze of detour signs and construction cones.

“We have had new clients call and they don’t know how to get here,” said Davis.

The new interchange is set to open this Sunday as the city’s fourth Diverging Diamond. MoDOT said the opening could be pushed back to Monday morning, at the latest, if crews can’t complete the project in time.  In order to finish the project, MoDOT closed Kansas Expressway, at the interchange, Friday night.  The closure will last through Sunday or Monday.  James River Freeway(U.S. 60) remains open.

“It is a big change. You are actually driving on the left side of the road, which is opposite to normal,” explained Brad Gripka, MoDOT Resident Engineer.  “Once people drive through it, they find that it allows them to get through the interchange a lot faster than normal,” stated Gripka.

MoDOT says the new designs have also helped reduce car crashes quite a bit.

More Diverging Diamonds are planned to be constructed in the coming years at Battlefield Road and U.S. 65, as well as and at US. 65 at Route CC in Ozark.
