BRANSON, Mo. -- Firefighters fought a large fire at an old, closed motel on the west side of the city on Wednesday afternoon and evening.  Heavy smoke could be seen from a camera at Table Rock Dam.

The fire at the two-story Queen Anne 2 motel on Shaefer Drive was reported about 5 p.m.  It was largely out by 7:30.  Fire crews remained on scene through the evening, dousing any remaining hot spots with water.

Authorities say the 36-unit motel building has been vacant for the past year, and was in the process of being remodeled.

The heat from the fire was so intense that it melted vinyl siding off of duplexes located across the street from the motel.  No other structural damage was reported to those homes.

The motel has two parts, Queen Anne 1, 3510 W. Missouri 76, and Queen Anne 2, a couple of blocks away at 245 Schaefer Drive, which is the one that burned.

Firefighters say the initial 911 call included a report of mattreses burning in one of the motel's rooms.  Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
