SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- City police are investigating the body of an adult man that was found by two passersby in Wilson Creek near Bennett Street at Hillcrest Avenue at midday Friday. Crime scene investigators figured they'd be working at the site well into the night.
The area is overgrown and heavily wooded. Police are treating the death as suspicious even though there's a chance that the man died of natural causes. An autopsy during the weekend could tell investigators more about how the man died.
Police don't know if the man died before or after his body went in the creek, or how long the body was there. A trail goes along Wilson Creek in the area but the body was not readily visible from the trail.
People who work nearby at Isabel's House crisis nursery say it's common to see transients in the area because several of them live in the woods along the creek. Police say it's possible the body belonged to a transient, but they're not taking anything for granted.
