SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A woman died after a hit-and-run collision near downtown Springfield early Friday. Springfield Police say officers were flagged down at 1 a.m. by a man who said he saw a woman hit by a car at Chestnut Expressway at Boonville Avenue. The man followed the vehicle and saw two people flee the scene.
Officers caught up with that vehicle near Grand Street at Broadway Avenue. Police say one man who fit the witness' description was cooperative and provided details surrounding the crash. Police questioned and released him while they continue to investigate.
The woman killed was Christine Rumple, 55, with no hometown given. Police say her immediate family is notified.
Rumple was stopped by a Springfield police officer about 8:30 p.m. on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
