JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Pvt. Romualdas Prenskas, an Army veteran whose remains have been unclaimed since his death in 2009, will be buried in a ceremony at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Springfield State Veterans Cemetery, 5201 S. Southwood Road in Springfield.

The interment ceremony will include full military honors and a flag line provided by the Patriot Guard Riders.

Prenskas served in the United States Army from 1967 to 1968.  After he died in March 2009, no family members came forward to claim his remains.  Under Missouri’s Unclaimed Veterans Remains statute, a funeral home can turn over the remains to Veterans Service Organizations for the purpose of interment after following the steps outlined in the statute.

"All veterans deserve to be treated with respect and honor for their service and sacrifice to our country," said Larry Kay, executive director of the Missouri Veterans Commission.  "This ceremony will bring closure and a measure of dignity and remembrance to those who protected us, yet were forgotten in death."
