FAYETTEVILLE, Ark, - Athletes at the University of Arkansas are meeting expectations in the classroom too.

The school announced Wednesday it exceeded the benchmark Academic Progress Rate of 925 in 18 of 19 athletic programs.   APR measures academic eligibility and retention of student-athletes.  The scores are based on the last four academic years.

"The vast majority of our programs are already exceeding both the current and the future benchmark target scores," said Long.  "I appreciate the hard work of our student-athletes, coaches and staff in helping us accomplish our goal of developing student-athletes to their fullest potential through intercollegiate athletics."

Arkansas' lone program failing below NCAA standards is the basketball team.  However, it avoided punishment because the players are showing improvement.  That punishment could have been loss in scholarships or a ban from the post-season.

"As we acknowledged a few years ago, it was going to take a number of years to see the statistical effect of the significant progress we have made academically in our men's basketball program," Long said.  "Under the leadership of Coach Mike Anderson and his staff, I am confident we will continue to make measurable progress both academically and athletically."

Including basketball, fifteen programs showed improvement compared to last year.  Men's tennis and women's gymnastics scored a perfect 1,000.
