SPRINGFIELD, Mo - A major accident on one of Springfield's busiest roads left two people dead, four others hospitalized, and the police are looking for answers. The crash happened at 1:15 Sunday afternoon and left both the northbound and southbound lanes of West Bypass closed until 8:30.
The initial crash happened when a van and an SUV heading northbound on West Bypass collided. The SUV crossed the median and hit a motorcycle head on before also colliding with a pickup.
Two more motorcycles traveling southbound tried to avoid the crash but could not and struck the pickup.
Both passengers on the motorcycle that was struck by the SUV were ejected and died at the scene. Four others were transported to hospitals with non life-threatening injuries. Police are still trying to figure out what caused the initial crash between the van and the SUV.
"That's going to take a long time to determine, we're going to have to look at these various pieces of evidence, whether it's marks on the road or injuries to people or other things and it's going to take a long time for us to piece that back together," said Springfield Police Sgt. Tom Luellen.
