Joplin, Mo. -- A Joplin bakery is serving up some of its sweet treats to help in the recovery from last year's devastating tornado.
The shop has created a specialty cupcake to help promote the rebuilding effort.
Deanna Johnson, Smallcakes Cupcakery:
We went with the marble butter and we went with the variegated icing.
Kate Massey, Rebuild Joplin: This is a really unique fundraising opportunity.
Deanna Johnson, Smallcakes Cupcakery: I called her and said "do you know of a good organization that we can work with to raise money for Joplin?" and she said "yeah, ours."
Kate Massey, Rebuild Joplin: "they really have taken this on themselves and just are offering the proceeds to help us complete our mission.
Deanna Johnson, Smallcakes Cupcakery: "There are people that just didn't have what it took to get back on their feet on their own, and so the rest of us can pitch in and help.
Kate Massey, Rebuild Joplin: "Hazel is a very sweet lady, a client that we met earlier this year after she had waited, you know, several months because of our work with the long-term recovery committee, and we met with Hazel and were able to go in and really gut and start over and use some donated dollars to help get her home."
Deanna Johnson, Smallcakes Cupcakery: "Everybody needs to pitch in and this is the way we can do it."
Kate Massey, Rebuild Joplin: "It means a lot when your neighbors reach out to help you. We've just been every excited to be working with them and very excited to see their dollars actually create tangible results for families like Hazel."
