LEBANON, Mo. -- Laclede County Sheriff Richard Wrinkle says a man was shot to death on Monday night after a fight with his wife at the couple's home on Violet Drive near Nebo.  Wrinkle says his department was called about the shooting at 11:44 p.m.

The man who died was Chris Bernelis, 52.  Wrinkle says Bernelis' wife shot him with a small caliber handgun.  He said she was treated at a hospital for injuries that she says are from Bernelis assaulting her.

Wrinkle says she admitted she shot her husband.  Investigators believe the couple had been drinking before the shooting.   The question for police and prosecutors is whether the shooting was in self defense.  An autopsy in Springfield on Tuesday evening might tell investigators more about Bernelis' death.

A relative of the couple told a reporter that the Bernelises had a rocky relationship that previously had been physically violent.
