LICKING, Mo. -- The family of a soldier from here who was serving in Afghanistan learned of his death on Wednesday morning.  Sgt. Tyler Smith was a 2006 graduate of Licking High School.

The Defense Department had not issued a news release about Smith's death, as of Wednesday afternoon, so the circumstances of his death aren't known.  His parents, Jeannie and Dan Smith, live in Licking, as do his brother and other relatives.   The pastor of their church heard about the soldier's death from the family and planned to ask for a prayer for them at a community Easter service on Wednesday evening.

Debbie Dakin, managing editor of The Licking News, knew Smith when he was growing up because she worked at Licking school for 10 years.  She described Smith as an "outstanding young man" whom no one ever spoke badly about.

Smith was married and had two children, according to information available on Facebook.  Arrangements for funeral services will depend on when the Army returns his body to the United States.
