Crews start to demolish Joplin High School

February 17, 2012|Ashley Reynolds, KY3 News | areynolds@ky3.com

JOPLIN, Mo--- While several months have passed since the deadly tornado hit Joplin, demolition has finally started at the high school.

School administrators say it took awhile to get all the paper work done. Friday at noon workers finished removing all the hazardous material from the high school.
Then demolition immediately started.

District leaders say they are recycling the metal.  In a few weeks, the high school will be no more. The area will be covered with dirt and used as a floodplain.

"It's bittersweet. You hate to see the school coming down, but you have to do this to move forward and rebuild.  That's the sweet part, because we are really excited about the plans for the new school," said Mike Johnson, with Joplin Public Schools.

Crews hope to start on the new high school this summer.
East Middle School is the only school left that's scheduled to be demolished, those plans should be approved by the board next week.
