CAMDENTON, Mo. -- A baby was in critical condition on Monday with a knife wound to her throat.  Bradie Simpson, 39, the baby's mother, is accused of taking her daughter into the woods near her home and cutting her between midnight and 4 a.m. Saturday.

Police say they found the child in Simpson's arms early Sunday morning in a wooded area near the family home southeast of Camdenton.  They say Simpson also had a cut on her neck.

A Camden County detective’s probable cause statement says Simpson called deputies to her home at 668 Dry Ridge Road about 10 p.m. Friday.  When they got there, she told them she believed her neighbor had shot himself.  Deputies found nothing wrong at the neighbor’s home and left.

At 12:26 a.m., Simpson’s adult son called the sheriff’s department and said his mother and sister were missing.  Deputies found blood on a bed and a bloodied knife in the bedroom of the family’s home.

That led to a search in the area around the trailer.  About 4 a.m., they found Simpson in a wooded area about 225 feet away.  She was unresponsive and covered in blood, although deputies said she was conscious.

After sending the mother and baby to a hospital, deputies got a search warrant for the home.  They found no evidence of a home invasion, a struggle or another person being in the home.

Deputies also say they found “two metal spoons and a small plastic baggie containing residue . . . (that) field tested positive for the presence of heroin.”

The probable cause statement also says deputies learned that Simpson told a pastor last October to hold her little daughter because “she was possessed and feared she might kill” her.

Simpson is charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action.  If she’s convicted, she could receive a sentence between 10 and 30 years for assault and three years or more for the second charge.  A judge set her bond at $200,000.
