January 26, 2012|by Paula Morehouse, KY3 News

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Flags are flying at half-staff in honor of an Evangel University student killed in Afghanistan.  Army 1st Lt. David Johnson was killed by a roadside bomb while he was on a foot patrol on Wednesday.

Johnson graduated from Evangel University in 2010, where he was a leader in the school's ROTC program.

"Our entire community joins David's family in mourning the loss of this outstanding young man who distinguished himself as a student and as a campus leader," said President Robert Spence.

The 24-year-old soldier was a native of Maysville, Wisc., and had only been overseas for about a month.  A university spokesman said Johnson has a brother who is attending Evangel.

He had recently been given the prestigious honor of commanding an infantry platoon.

Johnson is survived by his parents and three siblings.
