Fire damages shelter for homeless families at The Salvation Army in Springfield

November 28, 2011|edited news release

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- A fire at The Salvation Army's Family Enrichment Center displaced several formerly homeless families on Monday morning.   The fire started in a resident's bathroom about 6 a.m.  It damaged several rooms and insulation in the ceiling.

The Center is next to The Salvation Army's main center on Chestnut Expressway at Kansas Expressway.  The staff called 911 and evacuated the residents of the Family Enrichment Center.

Investigators don't know the cause of the fire but think it might be an electrical maulfunction.  The center is insured.

The Family Enrichment Center was at capacity -- 15 residents -- and The Salvation Army rented hotel rooms for the displaced families until the smoke smell can be eliminated.

Anyone wanting to help The Salvation Army continue to help these families can call (417) 862-5509.
