Nixon urges hunters to share the deer harvest with hungry people

Governor says donated venison could feed 150,000 people

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Gov. Jay Nixon hopes deer hunters in Missouri will be even more generous this year than last year.

Share the Harvest is a program that helps pay the processing costs for deer, which are then donated to families in need.  The governor stressed the importance of getting healthy protein into the diets of people who don't have many financial resources.  He also noted it would be much more difficult without the assistance of partners like Ozarks Food Harvest in Springfield.

Anyone interested in participating in Share the Harvest can find more information at the Missouri Department of Conservation website.
