Crime Stoppers unsolved crime of the week: $2 million construction crane vandalism

November 02, 2011|edited news release

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Crime Stoppers and the Springfield Police Department ask for help identifying people who vandalized a heavy construction crane.   The crime occurred at the flyover construction site at the intersection of U.S. 60 (James River Freeway) at U.S. 65.

The construction crew last Friday started noticing problems with their 275-ton crane, which is valued at $2 million.  They eventually discovered a bag of rock salt had been poured into the hydraulic system.  Construction managers advised it could take as much as $100,000 to repair the damaged parts and it’s possible the damage will be impossible to fix.

The construction company believes the damage occurred some between the evening of Thursday, Oct. 27, and the following morning.

If you were in the area of this incident and saw any suspicious people or vehicles at these times, or if you know the vandals, you can call Crime Stoppers at (417) 869-TIPS (8477) or go online at www.tipsubmit.com.  Tipsters do not have to give their name and could earn a reward.
