WAYNESVILLE, Mo. -- One of two people who was hospitalized after what investigators say was a shootout early Monday was charged on Tuesday afternoon with several crimes.   Everett Fields, 49, is charged with first-degree assault, receiving stolen property, possession of a controlled substance, and armed criminal action.

Fields lives in the home at 21474 Highway Y, near St. Robert, where investigators believe two groups of people -- one inside, one outside -- shot at each other about 3 a.m. Monday.

Sheriff J.B. King said early Tuesday evening that he was on the way to Camden County to get Fields, who was arrested by Osage Beach police after he was released from a hospital earlier in the day.   King said investigators would try to interview Fields but he doubted Fields would provide more information about the shootout.

King said he would release more information on Wednesday morning about the charges against Fields.  A judge set Fields' bond at $100,000.

King said the woman who was shot outside Fields' home, Kamica Leach, 29, of St. Louis, is not charged because the prosecuting attorney says there's not yet enough evidence for any charges against her.  King said Leach is scheduled to leave her hospital room on Wednesday morning unless investigators come up with more evidence for a charge.

The Pulaski County sheriff said early Tuesday that his department was still searching for suspects in the shootings of a man and a woman at the home on Highway Y.

Deputies were called to the house just after 3:30 a.m., but they now believe the shots were fired sometime around 3 a.m..   The victims told investigators they didn't know the identity of the suspects or why they were shot.

A man from St. Robert was hit in the upper leg and a woman from St. Louis was shot in the knee.  Both remained hospitalized on Tuesday.

News release from Sheriff J.B. King on Tuesday morning:

The investigation into the shooting incident on Y Highway has yielded few new answers. The call for help to authorities came in around the 3:41am time frame on 9-19-2011. At that time two Pulaski County deputies were parked less than one quarter mile away from the residence and they should have heard the shots fired. They did not hear any shots.

We did a canvass of the neighbors and found that most of them heard the shots just after the 3:00am time frame. Thus, there was a considerable delay in reporting this incident. In addition two vehicles were missing from the scene and these vehicles were occupied by an unknown number of people. We have not heard from any of these people.

Follow up interviews with both gunshot victims were conducted by Pulaski County reserve detectives or members of the Division of Drug and Crime Control (DDCC) of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Neither victim professed any idea why the shooting occurred, or who might have been involved. Neither had any clue what vehicles may have left the scene.

The identity of the gunshot victims is as follows; the male subject was Everett Brent Fields, age 49, of 21474 Highway Y, St. Robert, Missouri. The female gunshot victim was Kamica Lasha Leach, age 29, of 1521 Corinth Drive, St. Louis, Missouri. Both victims remain in area hospitals at this time.

Members of the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office detective division obtained a search warrant for the crime scene at 21474 Highway Y and they spent many hours processing the crime scene on 9-19-2011.

At this time the investigation into this incident continues.
