SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Springfield fire marshals and FBI agents are investigating a "possible, small explosive device" that was sent through the Postal Service to the U.S. Medical Center for Federal Prisoners on Kansas Expressway at Sunshine Street. The Springfield Fire Department's bomb unit was part of the emergency response. It "contained the envelope in a safe and secure manner away from the institution," according to a news release.
The package arrived in an envelope about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. The bomb squad "disengaged the device which did not detonate," the news release says.
(Editor's note: An earlier version of this report erroneously said the small package was left near the front gate.)
