May 19, 2011

Springfield, Mo —
Just imagine a permanent downtown farmer's market in Springfield...kind of like the Soulard Market in St. Louis or the River Market in Kansas City.  We may be seeing the beginning of that tonight at Jubilee Park at Jefferson and St. Louis.

Complete with live music, the Greater Springfield Farmers' Market has opened for business now at this new location near the Discovery Center.   There are an estimated 25-thousand employees and 16-thousand residents within a mile of the market.

Built-in shoppers who can buy local and buy fresh from from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. every Thursday, from now until October.  More than 20 vendors are selling everything from hangings plants to baked goods and handcrafts.

Veggies will be in as they're harvested.  Everything supplied with good advice and a fresh guarantee from local producers.

The Urban Districts Alliance has had plans for a permanent open pavillion drawn up.  It would accommodate 50 vendors with a roof, restrooms, performance area and green space.

The future of the permanent  pavillion depends on the success of this new Thursday farmers market...an experiment downtown leaders are watching closely.
