Nearly 13,000 vehicles descended on 53 sites across the U.S. Saturday, April 16, all filled with boxes and bags of sensitive documents to be shredded free of charge during Better Business Bureau’s seventh “Secure Your ID” Day community service event. Consumers and businesses across the nation dropped off 900,800 pounds of materials for safe, responsible destruction. 500 cars came to the event right here in Springfield.
The event is held twice a year in an effort to protect consumer from identity theft. Last year alone, 8.1 million Americans became victims of ID theft, resulting in the loss of $37 billion, according to a 2011 report from Javelin Strategy and Research
