Fire destroys home on south side of Springfield

April 06, 2011|by Gene Hartley and Mike Coonrod, KY3 News | newsalerts@ky3.com

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Heavy black smoke and flames were coming out of all sides of a two-story home in the 200 Block of E. Weaver Road when firefighters arrived about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday.  The home is just outside Springfield between Campbell and National avenues.

Terry Duhamel and his girlfriend have lived in the home for 22 years but weren't home when the fire started.  He said he doesn't know what could have started the fire.  He thought he might have lost 12 cats that were in the home.

The fire appeared to have started in the rear of the home.  Strong southerly winds blew the flames toward the front of the home, which faces north.

The fire is in the territory of the Battlefield Fire District.  Firefighters from Battlefield, Nixa Fire District, and the Springfield Fire Department fought the fire.   Logan-Rogersville firefighters covered Battlefield fire stations during the call.

Law enforcement officers blocked access to the road around the fire until late Wednesday afternoon so traffic wouldn't be in the way of the fire crews and their equipment.

"A lot of agencies have partnered to keep this safe for the public," said Battlefield Fire Chief Brian Newberry.

Duhamel said there was no gas in the mowers, no barbecue supplies, and the space heaters were unplugged.

"At this point, we don"t have any ideas as to the cause or origin of the fire," said Newberry.
