SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Health department leaders say we're just now heading into the peak of the influenza season. The Springfield-Greene County Health Department confirms local doctors have treated 74 people for the flu this month. However, that number only represents a small fraction, since most people don't seek medical treatment for the flu.
The numbers of new flu cases likely will rise over the next month or two, tapering off toward the begining of spring.
Overall, this year the lines at hospitals and clinics are shorter now that H1N1 fears have calmed.
“That scare that we had last year turned out to be maybe not so bad as we once thought it was. And I think people are less concerned this year,” said CoxHealth registered nurse Lucas Bryant.
The health department confirms one H1N1 case in Greene County this winter.
