It was a busy Saturday on the area sports scene with high school football and soccer playoffs plus college football and basketball.

In the Missouri state high school football semfinals, Webb City, an eight time state championship winner, will be the only school from southwest Missouri headed to the Jones Dome in St. Louis for this coming weekend's state title games.  The Class 4 Cardinals got four touchdowns from running back Maddy Johnson in a 35-8 victory at Harrisonville and will now face Warrenton for the state crown Saturday, November 27th at 3:15 p.m.

Cassville, trying to earn its third straight trip to the Class 3 state title game, got derailed by Richmond 23-21.  The Wildcats led 14-10 in the first half when Richmond took the lead for good on a 61 yard touchdown pass.  The Spartans then built their lead to 23-14, and although Cassville got back within 23-21, the Wilcats disdained a field goal in the closing moments of the game from the 16 yard line and went for it on fourth down instead.  The move backfired as Cassville failed to make the first down, and their season came to a disappointing close.

In Class 2, Lamar lost to Maplewood 33-19.

In high school boys soccer Springfield Catholic came close again, but fell in the Class 1 state championship match to Whitfield 1-0.  Still, the young Irish program, only four years old, finishes as second in the state, a tremendous accomplishment.

In college football the Missouri St. Bears closed their 2010 season with a 3-0 win over 17th ranked North Dakota St. at the Plaster Sports Complex.  It was a bizaare outcome considering the Bruin defense was giving up an average of 37 points per game, and kicker Austin Whitmer missed three first half field goals before making the one that counted early in the third quarter after North Dakota St. failed to cover the opening kick-off of the second half, allowing MSU to recover in good field position.  Although the Bears finish the season a disappointing 5-6, they did manage to go 5-0 at home, their first perfect year on their home turf since 1992.

In other college games, Mizzou pitched a shut-out as well, beating Iowa St. in Ames 14-0 and Arkansas needed two overtimes to get past Mississippi St. 38-31.  Knile Davis scored the deciding touchdown in the second O-T for the Razorbacks after his fumble in regulation led to the Bulldogs tying field goal.

In college basketball the Missouri St. Lady Bears blew a 14 point first half lead at Toledo, but behind the 32 points of Casey Garrison, they rallied to beat the Rockets 73-69 in the consolation round of the WNIT.

Elsewhere on the college hoop scene Mizzou routed Central Florida 95-58; Southwest Baptist won both their men's and women's games with Drury, taking the men's game 84-80 and the women's 57-49; the Evangel men outscored Southwestern Christian 77-59; the College of the Ozarks men fell at Missouri Southern 76-72; and the C of O women improved to 6-1 with a 77-54 victory over Central Methodist.
