New license plate tags aim to stymie thieves in Missouri

Some of the tags saying when registrations expire are now harder to steal.

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- If you have a car, you should have a tab -- that sticker saying when you need to renew your license.  Some people who don't want to pay for a license renewal go to other people's cars to get a sticker.

To fight back, Missouri's Department of Revenue unveiled its new design for the tabs.  Instead of just showing the month for renewal, the new tags will boldly feature the licence plate numbers, making mis-matched plates and stickers easier to spot.  The tabs will also be stretched and distorted if anyone tries to peel them off.

"Number one, it's a deterrent for the criminals that would take those tabs off.  Number two, it gives probable cause for the officer to make a stop, or to further validate the reason for an initial stop," said Springfield Police Department spokesman Cpl. Matt Brown.

These new enhanced tabs are now available at the four license offices in Greene County, St. Louis, Kansas City and Jefferson City.  As money for distribution comes in, tab availability will spread statewide.
