Saturday Sports Wrap: High school quarterfinals, college basketball

Drury men win,women lose in O'Reilly Center openers

It was quarterfinal round play in both high school football and boys soccer on Saturday as the winners advanced to the semifinals in the Missouri state playoffs.

In high school football, Camdenton lost to Kirkwood in the Class 5 quarterfinals 19-14.  In Class 4 Webb City advanced with ease past Union 42-7.  Cassville kept its hopes alive for a third straight Class 3 championship with a 20-6 victory over Rogersville.  Lamar edged Mountain View-Liberty by an missed extra point, 21-10 in Class 2.  And in Class 1, Miller fell to Valle Catholic for the second straight year, 56-26.

In boys high school soccer, Carthage was eliminated by Columbia Rock Bridge in the Class 3 quarterfinals 1-0.  In Class 2 Bolivar fell to Marshall 2-1. And Springfield Catholic was the only area team to advance to the final four, as a goal in the 66th minute gave the Irish a 1-0 win over Seneca Sacred Heart.

In college football Missouri St. fell to 4-6 after a 38-14 loss at Northern Iowa, who won the conference championship with the victory. Mizzou recovered from a two game losing streak to beat Kansas St. 38-28.  Ryan Mallet threw for a school record five touchdowns as Arkansas blasted UTEP 58-21. Southwest Baptist finished its season 7-4 with a 42-14 loss at Arkansas Tech.  And Missouri S&T eneded a 3-8 season with a 21-20 loss at Lincoln.

In college basketball the Drury men and women opened the school's new athletic facility, the O'Reilly Family Event Center, with differing results.  The 15th ranked Lady Panthers shot just 28 percent in falling to 22nd ranked Northeastern St. of Talequah, Oklahoma 52-39.  While the Drury men beat Upper Iowa 88-69 as their 19 point margin was not far off the 27 point margin that the Missouri St. Bears beat Upper Iowa by in a pre-season game. Elsewhere in college hoops the Evangel women bested Oklahoma Baptist 75-65 to improve to 2-0.  The College of the Ozarks Lady Bobcats are now 4-1 after topping St. Francis, Illinois 97-69.
