Springfield MO City Council approves alcohol sales at Pythian Castle

Castle sits within 200 feet of a school

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- The City Council decided Monday night that the owners of Pythian Castle can serve alcohol, even though the historic building sits within 200 feet of a school.  City code says the Castle can't be automatically granted a liquor license because its land abuts property of Evangel University.  The council made an exception in this case, as it has in a few other cases this year.

The Pythian Castle's owner argued people who hold wedding receptions there expect and deserve the opportunity to drink alcohol.   Tamara Finocchiaro addressed the council, explaining that alcohol would only be served for special events and would not be available nightly.

"I have a lot of faith in the students.  These people have chosen to go to that school for a reason; they're not the kids that are going to crash my parties or get illegal IDs and try to crash my party.  I just don't see it happening," she said.  "It's just not really their type of nature."

Evangel University President Robert Spence spoke out against it on Monday night, saying the Christian school was making "A respectful request of council to abide by the ordinance that has served us as a community.  We believe there are ample opportunities and places to provide the services that are being mentioned."

The resolution to allow a liquor license at Pythian Castle passed by a council vote of 7-2.
